Yesterday was an exciting day for PCS athletes as they competed at the AusCycling National Marathon Championships. As their coach, I could not have been prouder of their grit, determination, and stellar performances on the challenging Wagga Wagga circuit.
The race took place on a 31km looped course that included steep and technical climbs, fast and flowy descents, and everything in between. The elite field faced 3 laps while other categories raced 2 laps.
Leading the charge for my athletes was Izzy Flint in the Elite Women’s field. Iz went out hard from the gun and quickly found herself in the lead group of 5, pushing the pace on the climbs but on the final lap the eventual winner Courtney Sherwell had a slight advantage of 1mins20sec coming through one of the final feedzones (I was furiously watching the race unfold on the live timing link from Brissie). In pure Izzy style, she pushed hard to the end and fought hard to shrink the gap, crossing the line in 4hrs 16mins and 42secs just a mere 23secs behind Courtney. So close!
Alanna Van de Hoef had a consistent and determined ride in the Expert Women’s field to take home the gold medal while Owen Elvy in the Expert Mens field took home a bronze.
Lee Brentzell (Masters 5 Women) rode a strong race to finish her 2 laps in a time of 3:57:20.21
Guy Falla (Masters 9 Men) picked up another National Champions Jersey in his age group who now focusses his attention to Cairns at the upcoming UCI Masters XCO World Championships on the 19th May 2024. https://www.mtbmastersworldscairns.com.au/
