QLD XCO State Champs - Totally MAD
Words by Donna Dall
Progressive Coaching Systems athletes reigned supreme on the weekend taking home 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal on what can be described as one of the best courses I've ridden on in Australia!

This years QLD XCO States Championships headed north to Mackay and was hosted by the MAD (Mackay and Districts) Cycling Club at the Rowallan MTB park on Sunday 2nd October 2016.
It was little wonder Peter Lister and his crew from Mackay were keen to see as many riders as possible head north (and south) to race the Rowallan trails. Some new trails had been built specifically for the event at the Rowallan MTB Park and they certainly did not disappoint. With very little climbing on each 5km lap (approx 100m) the main climb was over and done with early and it felt like the riders were rewarded more than once on the descents that followed with the tricky but fun features called Dragon's Back and Original Sin. The rest of the lap consisted of fun flowing trails with some huge high built berms for ripping and railing on the trails called Jellyfish and MTB101 (I've heard that one before)!

The PCS and Planet-PCS Team athletes have been specifically preparing for the event and it certainly showed out on course. The depth of field in the U15 and U17 races was definitely a highlight for me! Nick Pedler (U19) showed that he is ready for the step up to U/23 & Elites come January with a 4 lap ride faster than the Elite field.

Matt Galway missed out on a podium position but was pleased with his 4th position in the hotly contested U/17 race. 📸 @robertconroycreative

Cooper Aves had a fantastic race and finished 3rd in the U/15 mens race. 📸 @robertconroycreative
Allan Grant was leading the Masters 1/2 Mens race early but unfortunately suffered a mechanical and then a little crash to finish 8th on the day. 📸 @robertconroycreative
David Penhaligon suffered in the heat but still finished a credible 7th in the Elite Mens field. 📸 @robertconroycreative

Attendance at a race like this takes time and preparation. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank ALL of the hard working parents who worked tirelessly behind the scenes both at home and at the race! It is a great team effort and I appreciate your time, effort and trust in me!
It's now time for the athletes to turn their attention to the 2017 National Series and the 2017 National Championships.
