Cameron Wright

2017 Junior World Champion - XCO

Donna Dall

Brief background of the past year and the next 2 years

Cameron has always shown interest on a bicycle from the young age of 3. He started riding school & fun rides from the age of 5 on a 20 inch bicycle. When he started school he was acknowledged for riding the most laps of a mini cross country course in the under 5 age group. He then moved up to the u10 age group where he continued to dominate his age group and win the series overall.

By now he had started riding the 10km mountain bike fun rides at most events and at age 10 started riding the 20km races in the junior series, which he won overall. He missed out on his first South African XCO champs race due to breaking his collarbone the week prior but competed in the XCO National series where he finished 2nd overall in the u10 age group.

At this stage Cyclelab Junior Academy approached him to join the academy and he remained with Cyclelab from 2010 till end 2011 with winning the year end award for most titles in the Kwazulu Natal club whilst 11 years old.

Team Jeep then approached Cameron to ride for them which he accepted and started 2012 in Team Jeep race gear. 2012 turned out to be a fantastic year for Cameron securing four SA Championship titles in various disciplines in the u12 age category.

On immigrating to Australia at the end 2012, Cameron started straight into the local racing scene with his first Australia XCO National series in his first year u15 category. Cameron’s progress has been overwhelming since arriving in Australia and has achieved fantastic results under coach Donna Dall of Progressive Coaching Systems. In early 2015, Cameron was offered a spot to race for Planet Cycles in their Planet-PCS- Race team. This led on to be selected in the junior U17 Australian MTB development squad.

2016 turned out to be a very successful year on the MTB XCO circuit and the road circuit with many podiums in both disciplines.

His passion lies with mountain biking especially the XCO Olympic format of racing but also enjoys the other disciplines when given the opportunity. His great idol is the late Burry Stander (RSA) with whom he was friends with and had the privilege to ride with when he was 10 years old before immigrating to Australia.

Cameron has always dreamt of winning a World XCO champs since he was 8 years old after meeting with his idol the late Burry Stander whom he still pays respect to in all his viral media posts “# I ride for Burry” and secures an “I ride for Burry” wristband around his stem of his bicycle. 2017 was Cameron’s first opportunity to realize his dreams and as a first year u19 junior competed in World Champs held in Cairns, Australia. A top 10 was a realistic goal in his first year so he can learn and then build on this and then go for the win at World champs in 2018 but true to Cameron’s character he was aiming for the top step on the podium and successfully achieved this by becoming the Junior World Champion by 38 seconds to second place.
